They are met with a warm and golden glow. In the rectangular room, all different sort of coins are stacked against the wall in short piles, while more valuable items, such as gems, curious potions and ancient vases, stand on marble pedestals.
(Perception 19)
Bruq and Oslando stare into the room. The half-elf is less distracted by all trinkets than the satyr, who has his mouth hanging open and stares blankly at it all. Dargothoth and Lyssa quickly cast an eye over the room, inspecting everything of value, pupils dilated with greed. And Mero is standing still, observing this allies and doing nothing.
“Guys”, Oslando says, “I don't see any obvious traps, but please be careful. That warning on the door isn’t there for no reason.”
Lyssa doesn’t snap out of the riches’ enthrallment and Dargothoth just chooses to ignore him.
(Intimidation 15) (Wisdom 14)
“Hey!” Mero shouts loudly, which is something the others aren't used to. “He said no touching! Don’t do anything stupid.”
Their songful siren is startled by the puppet’s loudness and even the dragonborn is surprised, although he would never admit it.
“Fine!” She mopes and lets out an exaggerated sigh. “I will touch nothing with my hands.”
Merodius seems satisfied, completely oblivious to the obvious loophole Lyssa made in her promise, but when Bruq wants to point this out, he is silenced.
“Quiet! Everyone, just… ssh.” She holds her hand in the air, index finger pointing to the ceiling, and leans forward a bit. “I think I can hear the crystal.”
(Wisdom 13)
“Yarr, ye be right, me capt’n, me sweet lass.” A raw voice, scraped by years of illegal booze and cheap cigars, booms throughout the room, but only reaches Lyssa's mind. “Are you going to get me or what? I’m right here in the chest all the way across the room.”
“What is it saying?” The cleric sounds impatient. He stands in front of her, casting down a cold shadow over her bronzed skin.
She points to the end of the corridor-like room, about eighty feet away, to a big chest with all stereotypical signs of a pirate’s treasure on it. It is surrounded by golden doubloons, made of an orangy kind of wood, has leather straps and golden knobs on it and, to make it extra obvious, a metal skull with crossbones on the lid.
“Ahoy, sea dog”, the voice echoes in her head.
“It’s right over there and I already find the voice very annoying. Did you have to put up with this as well?” Looking at her companions behind her, she sees Mero shrugging and Oslando nodding.
“You find me annoying? Well, I can tell you a secret if you want real treasure besides the crystal! Are you interested?”
Her eyes widen, like a little girl was given the biggest dollhouse to play with, and she nods her head in affirmation.
“Then get over here and don’t touch anything. You can take the objects after you get me, but hurry!”
“Let’s go, quickly”, she says and they follow her, running fast without attention for their surroundings. No shiny gemstone, mysterious case of scrolls or strange wands can distract them for what seems to be a race against the clock.
(Perception 6) (21 versus AC) (Intelligence 16)
“Can I just open you? I see no lock to pick.”
They stand beside her. Bruq is anxiously scanning the rest of the room behind him, bow already drawn, just in case.
“Yes, just open it and take me… Okay, that didn’t sound right.”
Without anyone else knowing why, Lyssa bursts into laughter as she reaches out. The lit pops open by itself. In it, lying on a thick red cushion, is the the Enochian gem. A light pulsates heavily, blurring the siren’s eyesight.
“Pick me up, pick me up!” The voice is too loud to resist and she follows its compelling demand, not noticing the almost breathing movement of the pillow and the pointy edges of the chest.
The glowing disappears as she wraps her hand around the crystal, not because it stopped glowing, but because the chest slams shut. She screams as the chest tries to bite off her hand and the two eyes of the metal skull glow with a sinister and hungry glow.
They all look with terror at the scene, how captain Lyssa may need a hook for a hand later, as Bruq states the dreadful importance of the situation. “Oh, fuck no, that’s a mimic!”
